Even after a good year or so, my site intensivedrivingschoolmiltonkeynes.co.uk does not rank in the top 10 (google.co.uk) for "Intensive Driving School Milton Keynes", and is nowhere for "Driving School Milton Keynes". Do you think the domain name is being penalised, or do you think there are other factors that contribute to the poor performance.

Your domain could potentially impact your performance in the Search Engine Results Pages (SERPs) for several reasons. Here are some factors to consider:

        1. Domain Age and History: Older domains generally have an advantage because they've had more time to build authority and backlinks. However, if the domain has a history of spammy activity or penalties, this could negatively impact its rankings.

        2. Domain Name: Keywords in the domain name used to be a significant ranking factor, but their importance has diminished. However, a relevant, memorable domain name can still aid in user trust and click-through rates.

        3. Backlink Profile: A strong, high-quality backlink profile is crucial for SEO. If your domain lacks authoritative backlinks or has many low-quality or spammy links, this could be holding you back.

        4. Technical SEO Issues: Factors such as site speed, mobile-friendliness, proper indexing, and the absence of technical errors (like broken links) are critical. Tools like Google Search Console and third-party SEO audit tools can help identify and fix these issues.

        5. Content Quality and Relevance: High-quality, relevant, and regularly updated content is essential. If your content is thin, outdated, or not valuable to your audience, this can hinder your rankings.

        6. Competitiveness of Keywords: If you're targeting highly competitive keywords with a new or low-authority domain, it might be challenging to rank well. Consider targeting long-tail keywords with less competition.

        7. User Experience (UX): A positive user experience, including a clean site structure, easy navigation, and low bounce rates, can positively influence rankings.

        8. Brand Authority and Social Signals: Strong brand presence and social signals can indirectly influence rankings by driving traffic and engagement.

To assess whether your domain is holding you back, consider conducting a comprehensive SEO audit. Here are some steps you can take:

        1. Check Domain Authority: Use tools like Moz's Domain Authority or Ahrefs' Domain Rating to evaluate your domain's authority compared to competitors.

        2. Analyze Backlinks: Use backlink analysis tools to evaluate the quality and quantity of your backlinks.

        3. Audit Technical SEO: Use tools like Screaming Frog, SEMrush, or Ahrefs to identify and fix technical SEO issues.

        4. Evaluate Content: Ensure your content is high-quality, relevant, and optimized for your target keywords.

        5. Monitor User Metrics: Check metrics like bounce rate, time on site, and pages per session using Google Analytics.

        6. Review Competitors: Analyze the strategies of high-ranking competitors to identify areas where you can improve.

If you provide your domain name, I can offer a more specific analysis.

Determining if your domain is holding you back in the SERPs requires a comprehensive analysis of various factors including website content, technical SEO issues, backlink profile, user experience, and competition. Conducting an SEO audit can help identify any issues impacting your search rankings and devise strategies to improve your website's visibility and performance in search engine results.

When you're buying a domain name, contact a good seo agency to see if they can see that the domain has had any penalties applied to it or not?

such as algorithmic or manual Google penalties applied in the past.

We did this when we purchased our garden room company, we wanted to see if the domain name, possibly had any Google penalties applied to it in the past

Thanks guys. Yes open site explorer does not register any backlinks.  According to google webmasters tools we have 49 links in from 7 domains. I'll work through the points you raised.

I'm disappointed about the backlinks as we have, in the past, paid for blogger outreach with programmes like fatjoe and the hoth.  I take it, you would not recommend these?

Agree with Donald above, I do not believe your website is being penalized in anyway for your URL. Some things to consider to help:

                1. Setting up, and/or optimizing as much as possible, your social media profiles (Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Pinterest)
                2. Create & Verify Your Google My Business Profile if you haven't already.
                3. Use Moz Local to see what profiles your business has or doesn't have, then use Moz Local to help or do them manually.
                4. Add Schema to Your Website to help Google properly index it.
                5. Look at some of the backlinks the people ranking in the top 3 for the 2 searches you mentioned above using Moz's Open Site Explorer, Ahrefs, or SEMRush, and then see what links you can gain to your website as well from what they have.

                  Hi Gemma,

Will need more information. Time is not the only factor the ranks a website. I used open site explorer and see that there are no backlinks.

Backlinks should be a focus area if you want to rank your site.

Duplicate content issue, across site domains (blogging)

Hi all, I've just come to learn that a client has been cross-posting their blog posts to other blogs (on higher quality domains, in some cases). For example - this is the same post on 3 different blogs. http://thebioethicsprogram.wordpress.com/2014/06/30/how-an-irb-could-have-legitimately-approved-the-facebook-experiment-and-why-that-may-be-a-good-thing/
                    http://blogs.law.harvard.edu/billofhealth/2014/06/29/how-an-irb-could-have-legitimately-approved-the-facebook-experiment-and-why-that-may-be-a-good-thing/
                    http://www.thefacultylounge.org/2014/06/how-an-irb-could-have-legitimately-approved-the-facebook-experimentand-why-that-may-be-a-good-thing.html
And, sometimes a 4th time, on an NPR website. I'm assuming this is doing no one any favors and Harvard or NPR is going to earn the rank most every time. I'm going to encourage them to publish only fresh content on their real blog, would you agree? Can this actually harm the ranking of their blog and website - should we delete the old entries when migrating the blog? They are going to move their Wordpress Blog to hosting on their real domain soon:
http://www.bioethics.uniongraduatecollege.edu/news/ The current set up is not adding any value to their domain. Thank you for any advice! Ketan

Subdomain SERPS are different from the root domain SERPS

I am fairly new to SEO so bare with me. I created two campaigns within Moz, one tracking the sudomain www.mysite.com and another tracking just the root domain mysite.com. When I look at the keyword rankings I get different results from Google, Bing and Yahoo. For instance, the root domain shows rankings in Bing and Yahoo, but "Not in top 50" for Google. For my subdomain, it is reversed. I see rankings for Google, but "not in top 50' for Bing and Yahoo. What can I do to solve this issue? I am using canonical tags, but it is a domain redirect issue? Thanks in advance

How can I maintain my website's authroity if I change the domain name?

I have 2 sites.  Site A is doing well and growing, but has a low Domain Authority.  Site B is older, has a higher authority but I want to retire it as the site's topic is well dated. Can I move all of my content on site A, to site B, change site B's name to Site A's name keep its higher authority and add all of the content and 301 redirect from site A to site B? Whew, Thanks for any thoughts, Jeff Strassman

Can Page Authority of a site be higher than its Domain Authority?

I own a website called Takeyourtips.com. While doing a search no Google, I found that the page authority of the home page (31) is higher than the domain authority (23). I was wondering if it's really possible because my understanding was page authority of a page is determined by its domain authority. Therefore, it the domain authority of a website is 23, none of its page could have a higher page authority. Plus, upon consulting an SEO expert, I was told that neither Domain Authority or Page Authority of a page carries any importance as far as higher ranking of a website is concerned. Is this true? Thanks in advance for the answers. Cheers, Sushant large

Hyphenated keyword rich domains - is a hyphenated .co.uk better than a non-hyphenatedlesser TLD such as .org?

Hey there, Would anyone be kind enough to share their experience of using keyword rich hyphenated domains. Are they as effective at tanking as non hyphenated domains? i.e would it be better to get a lesser non-hyphenated TLD such as .org for example rather than a hyphenated co.uk?

                    Keyword domains

Hello, I am the proprietor of RacquetSource.com, Is there any merit to using keyword domains and have them redirect to the site, or a specific page on the site? For Example, the keyword term, Squash Racquets, if I were to purchase a domain name, squash-racquets.com and have it redirect to http://www.racquetsource.com/squash-racquets-s/95.htm will this effect positively to my search ranking of the keyword term Squash Racquets? Any insight would be greatly appreciated. Cheers Geoff
